属鲤形目，鲤科，鲌亚科，原鲌属。分布在黑龙江、辽河、黄河、淮河、长江、珠江、钱塘江、闽江、台湾岛、海南岛等水系的中下游干支流和附属静水水体中。红鳍原鲌喜欢栖息在水草繁茂的湖泊中，也可生活在江河的缓流里。是一种体型较小的经济鱼类。
