肉食性，以小型贝类、甲壳类为食，齿板锐利，可轻易咬碎贝类、甲壳类的坚硬外壳。条石鲷主要分布在我国福建、广东、浙江等海水较深的清水、太平洋和印度洋沿岸，大部分栖息在温带、亚热带水域,或栖于岩礁及珊瑚礁地形海域。
